This is a short documentary on the incredible people of the Afghan Kuchi (Koochi) Tribe. These people spend their entire lives living a nomadic lifestyle, migrating towards the warmer area in winters, usually the Northern area of Pakistan (khyber pakhtunkhwa) and then going back to their homeland in summers. They are considered to be a part of the biggest human migration in the world every year since hundreds of years and it is because of this practice, their culture and lifestyle is now admire by people from around the world.

This documentary is to remind us all Kuchi Tribal Jewelry lovers, that while wearing/selling their handmade jewelry, we do, in some way, become a part of their tribe.

How natural onyx stone jewelry is made.

Onyx From The Mountains

Onyx stone is usually found in the remote mountainous regions. Sometimes these mountains are very high and sometimes they are in form of plain land. The two main methods of mining any kind of onyx or marble stone is to either use drilling machines to take the blocks out of the mountain's layer or to use wire sawing machines to cut them into cubes and then take them out using huge cranes.

Cutting the stone

The onyx brought from the quarry are then carefully chosen to manufacture the jewelry. They are cut into desired cubic sizes using a diamond blade machine. As you can see in the photo, that this methods requires a lot of professional experience as in involves a risk of getting injured. Therefore only the well trained skilled workers are given this task.

Giving the cubes the required shape

The small cubic onyx pieces are then rubbed against the blades using very unique and custom techniques to give them the shape we require. The shape can be spherical, long beads or any other design.

voilà! It is ready

After polishing the prepared onyx stone design, the stone is then glued strongly with the metal clip and voilà! It is ready.

Handcrafted onyx stone jewelry is truly a unique art, which can only be found in my part of the world.
